VINYL COVER, IN WAVES

The brief for this project was to redesign an existing favourite album’s vinyl cover, in my own emerging style, while deriving nothing from the existing cover art.

I chose to redesign Jaime XX album new album, In Waves, which was released September 2024. The album genre is a mashup of genre’s, but can be narrowed down to alternative dance/electronic. Full of powerful beats Jamie xx's "In Waves" is an exploration of emotional depth and sonic adventure, blending house, ambient, and pop influences. The album captures a spectrum of feelings, from nostalgia to joy, often reflecting the complexities of modern life. Its production features intricate layers and textures, creating an immersive listening experience that is synesthesia invoking. Jaime XX is able to create melodic hooks out of manipulated vocals - paired with lots of memorable samples and baselines, which make it all the more engaging to listen to. Collaborations with various artists such as Honey Dijon, John Glacier, Kelsey Lu, Panda Bear, Robyn, Oona Doherty and The Avalanches add diverse and refreshing perspective to the album. Overall, "In Waves" is both introspective and danceable, inviting listeners to engage with their emotions while enjoying its rhythmic, captivating soundscapes.

Typically, there is a strong emphasis on abstract typography that has been manipulated associated with electronic music and album cover art. In this case, I wanted to embrace typography as the main visual element on my album cover design, and try to express the movement in the music within the typography itself. Featured, you can see ‘In Waves’, taking on a new warped form, connecting from front to back, with incorperations of daffodils which is a reference from one of the most popular tracks on the list.
